SP-Arte 2023: Check out the best of São Paulo's artistic circuit
SP-Arte is taking place between March 29th and April 2nd, at Pavilhão da Bienal, inside Ibirapuera Park. Besides the traditional sectors of the fair, the 19th edition presents Showcase - a new curatorial initiative that spreads throughout the stands and hallways of the event.
The proposal "Recovering paradises: not needing the end to arrive", curated by Carollina Lauriano, questions the separation between anti-racist social movements and environmental and ecological discussions - a false antagonism bequeathed by colonial modernity. Among the participating artists are Claudia Andujar, Rebeca Carapiá, Jaime Lauriano, Panmela Castro, Maré de Matos, Rosana Paulino, and others.
We have selected some must-see exhibitions happening in the city during the fair.

Engine and transformation: collective art at the XV Documenta in Kassel
This year's Kassel Documenta raises the question "how do people create the material and immaterial infrastructure they need to nourish and sustain themselves and their ecosystems?". In the press conference of the recently opened Documenta in Kassel, the general director of the institution Sabine Schormann says “these are processes that take a lot of time”. The XV Documenta search committee formed in 2018 chose for the first time as artistic director a curatorial collective formed by artists instead of a professional curator. The collective Ruangrupa, founded in 2000 after the fall of the Suharto dictatorship in Indonesia, proposed a Biennial made up of collectives or artists working on behalf of the collective. Altogether, it’s difficult to conceptually classify the specificities of collectives or groupings in this edition of Documenta, but it can be said that their concerns are, in general, with forms of learning, community and economy. Also, as it is largely formed by groups belonging to the geopolitical south, the problems encountered by them, which often lack financial support, also come to the fore, however, always with a proposal for a solution.

Atos Modernos: New practices for art collecting
In 2020, Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo and the Ivani and Jorge Yunes Collection began an unprecedented partnership in Brazil, which proposed the creation of a transdisciplinary artistic program capable of integrating the two institutions. To start the project, the private collection subsidized the hiring of the curator and researcher Horrana de Kássia Santoz, who worked at Pinacoteca for two years, conducting a dense and in-depth research on the two collections, private and public, as well as their relationships. The result is the Atos Modernos exhibition, which brings together a set of five unpublished works by artists Castiel Vitorino Brasileiro, Mitsy Queiroz, Luciara Ribeiro, Olinda Wanderley Tupinambá and Charlene Bicalho, exhibited from June 4th at Pinacoteca.

Centenary of the Brazilian Modernist Art Week
Considered the historical landmark of modernism in Brazil, the celebration of the event will definitely be memorable: an extensive list of exhibitions, shows, plays and other artistic and cultural manifestations are being held throughout the country.
The traditional interpretations of the Week usually highlight a certain protagonism of the city of São Paulo, its artists and its urbanization process, as the great agents of the modern age in Brazil. However, 100 years later, artists and theorists are not necessarily interested in revisiting the founding myth of Brazilian modernism in a celebratory mood. Today, it is mainly important to expand the debates and discuss the contradictions of Brazilian Modernism as a hegemonic movement from São Paulo and its assumed progressive character.

Pivô Satélite / A conversation with the artists of the 3rd edition of the project
Since 2020, the Pivô Satellite digital platform presents works by artists selected by a group of three young guest curators. Each curator chooses four artists who will create an individual work to be exhibited on the digital platform for one month. In addition to the quality of artistic research, the selection takes into account aspects such as gender diversity, ethnicity, race, background, and social and cultural contexts.
Aiming to contribute to the creation of a support network for the artistic community, the initiative invites artists to present experimental projects that can take on different formats, themes, and media. Opening on 9th July, the 3rd edition, entitled 'Sexo, Mentiras e Videotape' (Sex, Lies, and Videotape) is curated by Raphael Fonseca. To find out first-hand what to expect from the projects, we interviewed the four artists participating in the 3rd edition, Eduardo Montelli, Laura Fraiz, New Memeseum, and Ventura Profana.
